Rocket City Pride
Brush off your rainbow gear and get ready for the second annual Rocket
City Pride celebration on June 23 at the Historic Huntsville Depot
Roundhouse. According to organizer James Robinson, “this year is all
about families, friends, pets and community.”
Pride festivities are giving back to the community this year through a
food drive. Bring non-perishable food items – like drink mixes,
cooking oil, canned soups, or peanut butter - to Rocket City Pride and
drop them at booth 24. The donation reaps each giver a chance to win a
pair of tickets to the Kathy Griffin comedy show at the Von Braun
Center this August.
Also new this year is headlining entertainer SIRPAUL who will dazzle
Pride-goers with his beats beginning at 8 pm. The New York-based
musician describes his sound as next generation, new wave electro-folk
that combines acoustic and electric guitars with old school hip-hop
and electro-beats. Not only has the artist remixed for noted pop-star
Britney Spears, he has also licensed music to the well-known design
house Giorgio Armani.
Back by popular demand is the Pride Parade, which begins at 5 pm. Miss
Trailer Park will lead the parade on a lawnmower. Performer SIRPAUL
will also participate. Amongst vehicles featured in the parade are a
Rolls Royce, a classic MG, a trio of mustangs, and the ever-popular
Pride celebration and festivities begin Sunday, June 23 at 1 pm. The
event is free and features complimentary entertainment, face painting,
animal balloons, a bouncy house, popcorn, slushies, and hot dogs.
Day-time entertainment includes the Spirit of the Cross Choir, Marge
Loveday, the Feminist Choir, and DJ Sweet T. A ‘Diversity Village’
with 50 vendor booths will encircle the Roundhouse. Participants range
from artists to local nonprofits and businesses.
Rocket City Pride is brought to you by the nonprofit GLBT Advocacy &
Youth Services, a group dedicated to engaging in effective advocacy
for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people.
